Sand Tobogganing

Hold the mouse over this picture to see another picture.A leisurely tractor ride over to the massive sand dunes on the eastern side of the island is how this adventure starts. Upon arrival it’s a small hike across the sand dunes then the action begins. Using a toboggan as your sled, you fly down these mammoth slopes and compete with each other to find out who is the fastest.

Excellent fun and a great adrenalin rush is usually how it is described. it. Unlike surfing, the sand dunes are there all the time so you can slide down them as many times as you like.

However be warned, you will need to go for a shower or swim afterwards to remove the sand that has lodged in various parts of you body you probably didn’t think was possible.

Fishing

The fishing on both sides of the island varies from excellent to nothing. It all depends on where you go, the bait you use and how nicely you talk to the fish when you get there. To improve your odds, track down a staff member who has fished where you want to go and ask them what bait use, the best tides to fish and the best places to fish.  If you are nice enough to them, they may even tell you about special places they go too, however don’t count on it (good fishing spots are like a gold mine and it may take a few beers to get the location out of them). A general guide that may help you is listed below but nothing beats current local knowledge.

The Surf beach offers a great view while you fish and this may help to compensate is there is nothing biting. Tailor and Bream are the most common catches and they are usually found in the gutters that form along the beach. Baits that have been successful on the surf beach are pilchards, white bait, cockles or live worms (if you are good enough to catch them). Fishing rods, tackle and bait suitable for the surf beach are all available from reception.

On the Broadwater side the fishing has been known to be slightly more productive. Catches of Flathead, Whiting, Bream and the odd Stingray are quite common. The best bait is live yabbies. These can be collected using a yabby pump and finding them can be nearly as much fun as catching the fish. Other baits to use are Squid, Prawns and white bait. Hand lines, tackle and bait are all available from reception. To increase you chances on the Broadwater side, consider hiring a boat from the Watersports beach for a few hours. Even if you don’t catch a fish a cruise on the Broadwater out the front is a great way to relax.

Tube Rides

Hold the mouse over this picture to see another picture.A great way to get yourself wet and cool off on a hot day is to go for a Tube ride.

Perched on an inflatable Doofer being pulled by a speedboat, it is a thrill-a-minute ride comparable to water-skiing, but requiring no skills.  Bumping over waves and wake, the excitement is in the speed and the challenge is staying on! . Basically the boat does all the work and you hold tight and enjoy the ride.

More thrills occur when the speedboat pulls two doofers.  Make the others fall off because you can be sure they'll be trying to bump you over!  Tube rides are great fun and an excellent way to enjoy yourself.

Great fun - recommended for all ages

Jetski Rides

Hold the mouse over this picture to see another picture. The sensation of controlling your own powerful jetski at 60kms an hour is hard to describe. The sheer power and thrill of performing manoeuvrers and racing around the course is a great way to enjoy yourself on South Straddy.

The South Stradbroke Island resort Jetski course is the largest in South Queensland and the fleet is fast and reliable.  You can choose from one seater or two seater craft.  Full instruction is available for beginners and riders are monitored at all times.

But beware, after 15 minutes you may become hooked so be sure to bring some extra money.

Great fun - recommended for all ages

Speedboat Rides

Experience the exhilaration of travelling up 60kms an hour in a speedboat. The calm waters of the Broadwater in front of the resort offer a perfect place for the driver to let loose.

With the G force of tight turns and the thrill of the speed over water, this ride is great fun.

So strap on your life jacket and get set for a thrilling ride, this is something you will thoroughly enjoy. And age is certainly no barrier.  As can be seen by the picture of 95 year old Jack on the photos page, this is an experience that can be shared by everyone.

Great fun - recommended for all ages

See our wildlife at night

Departing from the bar area at 7:30PM most nights, this tour comprises of a stroll from the resort, through tropical bushland, to the eastern surf beach and back. It is an exciting way to view natural Australian wildlife in their nocturnal environment.

The tour can take up to 2 hours and this depends on how much wildlife you see. From the surf beach the lights of the Gold Coast look spectacular twinkling in the distance, and this sight is often described as a highlight of the tour. Another fascinating aspect of the Eastern surf beaches are the armies of Ghost Crabs blanketing the sand.

Your guide is experienced in finding the animals at night. With the aid of spotlights and torches you are guaranteed to see a cross-section of nocturnal Australian wildlife. Be sure to bring a jumper or jacket as the wind on the eastern side of the island can be chilly.

Common wildlife you may see when on this tour are:
